Searching for Amani
Ajyal Competition
Synopsis
In the vast landscapes of Laikipia, Kenya, 13-year-old Simon Ali’s life takes a devastating turn when his father, a respected conservancy guide, is mysteriously murdered. Grief-stricken but determined, Simon picks up his video camera and embarks on an investigation to uncover the truth. With his best friend Haron by his side, Simon’s quest for answers leads them deeper into the complexities of the region’s political conflicts, unresolved colonial tensions, and the grim realities of climate change. As Simon delves into his father’s death, he begins to realise the interconnectedness of these issues. The encroaching drought threatens both the wildlife conservancies and the local communities, amplifying already existing tensions.
Simon’s pursuit of justice evolves into something far greater than a personal journey—he discovers the harsh realities of how environmental degradation is exacerbating inequality, deepening regional conflicts, and displacing entire communities. ‘Searching for Amani’ is a poignant coming-of-age documentary that portrays Simon’s transformation from a grieving boy into an impassioned activist. The film sensitively captures his personal growth, all while confronting the larger global crises of climate change and social justice. Through Simon’s unfiltered lens, the film offers a powerful and moving reflection on resilience, activism, and the fight for a better future.
