Sound Editing

In collaboration with La Fémis, the Institut Francais Qatar, the French Embassy in Doha, FNAC and Fifty One East.
In this inspiring workshop, participants will learn all the technical and artistic skills necessary to master post-shooting soundtrack production. Upon completion, trainees will be self-sufficient technically in the post-production environment, and fully understand sound theory and its dedicated tools.
Summary:
- This workshop is a six-day programme for six sound editors.
- Participants will work on a 2-3 minute scene (image + all the different audio tracks of the soundtrack) using 6 Protools suites, Foley artist, and Foley studio.
- Trainees will learn to tell a genuine story with a soundtrack. After the first day dedicated to the importance of aesthetic in audio st—orytelling, attendees will learn all the technical aspects of sound editing and sound design, from cleaning the recorded sounds to the importation of additional sounds and Foley, and the preparation of the all the necessary tracks for the final mix.
You may also be interested in the ‘Sound Mixing’ practical lab that takes place from 25 to 30 October. It is possible to apply for both labs, but you should mention this in your application.

Submission Process and Selection of Candidates:
Please submit all required materials as one document to training@dohafilminstitute.com. After the application deadline, the lab mentor and the DFI team will review applications. Candidates may be invited for a supplemental interview during the selection process. Please note that submission of your application does not guarantee a place in the program. Depending on the number of submissions, some applicants may be waitlisted or declined. All applicants will be notified of the results of their submission in a timely manner.
Lab Mentors
Séverin Favriau is a sound designer, sound supervisor and music composer. He discovered cinema through his studies at ETPA (AudioVisual School) at Rennes between 1997 and 2000. After 5 years as a sound recordist in various documentaries, he began sound design at 28 years old. His collaboration with Amos Gitaï and Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire gave him a new musical approach of sound design, and today, these two components are present in his work. He was nominated twice for the Best Sound César (French Academy awards) with Mathieu Amalric’s movie ‘On Tour’ in 2011, and ‘Raw’ directed by Julia Ducournau in 2018. As a natural continuation of his work on ‘Raw’, he wrote his first music score for Jeremie Guez’s movie: ‘A Bluebird in my Heart’, selected in the famous SXSW Austin Film Festival. He also teaches regularly at La Fémis, the National French Film School.
Falah Hannoun
Falah Hannoun is a sound recordist and sound designer who currently works at Doha Film Institute recording and designing short films, and also conducting some of their labs and workshops. He has worked as a recordist on many feature films such as the Oscar Nominated ‘Theeb’ and John Stuart’s debut, ‘Rosewater’. He holds an MFA in Directing and Sound from RSICA and a BFA in Acting and Directing.
About La Fémis
La Fémis, the French national film school, was founded in 1986 and is currently chaired by award-winning director Raoul Peck. Each year, the school selects and trains 50 students in the various disciplines of filmmaking. Exceptional films created through the film school’s programmes have been selected for and won awards at many film festivals, including the Festival de Cannes, the Berlin International Film Festival and the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. La Fémis has been ranked one of the top 10 film schools in the world by ‘The Hollywood Reporter’.
