At the end of the training, filmmakers direct a five-minute film.

Doha Film Institute covers the costs of tuition, travel and accommodation for two Qatari applicants.

The programme takes place in Paris from 5 August to 9 September, 2016.

La Fémis

La Fémis, the French national film school, was founded in 1986 and is currently chaired by award-winning director Raoul Peck. Each year, the school selects and trains 50 students in the various disciplines of filmmaking. Exceptional films created through the film school’s programmes have been selected for and won awards at many film festivals, including the Festival de Cannes, the Berlin International Film Festival and the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. La Fémis has been ranked one of the top 10 film schools in the world by ‘The Hollywood Reporter’.

All courses are conducted in English. The ability to speak, read and write English is compulsory.

Number of trainees: A total of nine aspiring Gulf filmmakers will be selected to participate in the programme, two of whom will be Qatari nationals.

Professional level: Students or young professionals who are highly motivated to make films.

Age: Applicants must be between 21 and 30 years of age.

Qatari applicants may email completed application form, all required attachments, and proof of Qatari citizenship to training@dohafilminstitute.com.

Once all applications are received, a selection committee comprised of representatives of the Doha Film Institute, the French Embassy and La Fémis will select the two candidates who will receive scholarships from the Institute.

Objectives of the programme

The objective of the programme is to teach the fundamentals of cinematic language, the principles of directing, cinematography and sound, and the steps and professional methods from shooting to editing. By the end of the programme, each trainee should be able to “write” a cinematic sentence.

While discovering classic and contemporary French cinema and the filmmaking craft (including scriptwriting), each participant will receive technical training in the fields of camera wrol, sound, scriptwriting, script continuity and editing.

Each trainee will produce a five-minute film. Teams will be formed, and each trainee will have a rotating function: director, camera or sound on each film that is directed. Each film will be analysed.

The first part of the programme is dedicated to theory and technical training.

The second part of the programme is dedicated to the production of short films (preparation, shooting and editing).

Location of the La Fémis Gulf Summer University

The programme takes place at La Fémis, in France (6 rue Francoeur – 75018 Paris). La Fémis will provide classrooms, screening rooms and other facilities sufficient for the scope and length of the programme. La Fémis will also provide all the equipment necessary for the practical training and the production of the films (cameras, sound devices, editing suites…).
