Synopsis

‘CHIRI/Trace’ is an unusual and very personal documentary focusing on the aging foster mother of extraordinary Japanese artist and filmmaker Naomi Kawase. Using images of the steadily approaching death of a person she greatly loves, the director contemplates the vulnerability of human existence. A deeply moving gem.

About the Director

Naomi Kawase was born in Kara, Japan, in 1969. Her films are often very intimate, autobiographical documentaries. She became the youngest winner of the Caméra d’Or at Cannes in 1997 for ‘Suzaku’. Her fourth feature, ‘The Mourning Forest’ (2007) won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2007; ‘Hanezu’ was selected for competition at Cannes in 2011.
