Synopsis
Based on the popular U.K. comic strip set in a quaint English village (and considered a modern reworking of Thomas Hardy's 19th century novel "Far from the Madding Crowd"), "Tamara Drewe" recounts the romantic adventures of a young journalist who returns back home after years away to sell the house she inherited from her late mother. Gemma Arterton's flinty, flirty, and slightly filthy performance as a sexual interloper among the rural rubes she left behind as an ugly-duckling teenager is nothing short of electrifying. The former Bond girl from "Quantum of Solace," who also appeared in this year's geeky fanboy films "Clash of the Titans" and "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," Arterton delivers a first-rate and fully fleshed-out portrayal here, far away from the green screens and spy gimmicks that may have overshadowed her acting chops in the past.
About the Director
Stephen Frears
Born in Leicester, England during WWII, Frears graduated from Cambridge University and worked on iconic Sixties films including "Morgan" and "if…" before directing his own projects. Coming into prominence with "My Beautiful Laundrette," he made his Hollywood debut with "Dangerous Liaisons." Frears' other films include "The Grifters," "High Fidelity" and "The Queen," which won an Oscar® for Best Actress.
