It’s the weekend, the children have a break from school and the weather is simply sublime. Bring your family to Katara to enjoy the festivities we have lined up to entertain you during the final stretch of DTFF ‘11.

Family Events

Wednesday October 26th and Thursday October 27th from 4:00 PM to midnight at the Cultural Village of Katara

Live entertainment, creative activities and interactive experiences for youth and families to enjoy.

Salaam Dunk – See the film, meet the stars and watch them play!

In celebration of the DTFF’s screening of “Salaam Dunk”, we proudly present a unique ladies basketball show, in co-ordination with Qatar Women’s Sports Committee.

2011 DFI Family Day

Friday October 28th from 2:00PM to midnight at the Cultural Village of Katara

The Doha Tribeca Film Festival invites you to FAMILY DAY where families of all ages can come to play, learn and experience together! Kids will receive a “Passport to Fun” which will guide them through varied and delightful experiences.

Our Festival stages will feature spectacular live performances from Bollywood Dancers to Cirque performers, as well as emerging talent from right here in Doha. Enjoy the finest hospitality and goods that the resident organizations of Katara have to offer while participating in activities including: arts & crafts, sports, filmmaking, kites, music, dance, video gaming, animation and more!

There are activities and interactions for youth of all ages, from toddlers to teens, and events even parents and caregivers will enjoy. All family events will be presented throughout the day in both Arabic and English.

Along with the full day of activities, there will be a FREE 6:00 PM screening of the family-friendly film Spy Kids, a Doha Film Institute and Miramax presentation to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the movie’s release.

  • Learn new dance moves and watch the B-Boys of the Mighty Jokerz Crew flip, spin, breakdance and pop around the dance floor!
  • Jump Zone Come watch amazing Cirque performers flip, spin, soar through the air and perform amazing gravity defying tricks! Be amazed as fire-dancers light up the night and stilt-walkers float across the stage.
  • Angélique Kidjo will be performing her dynamic and uplifting music that has established her as a Grammy ® award-winning recording artist. Named “Africa’s Premier Diva” by Time Magazine, she strives to transcend barriers and provides a voice for those in need.
  • The eclectic feminine vocalist Oum, will also be gracing the festival stage, bringing her Moroccan style and soul-filled sounds that audiences are sure to enjoy.

  • Join the Ministry of Social Affairs and experience traditional Qatari arts and crafts.
  • Read a good book and hear stories come to life with special guest readers in our reading lounges. Presented by Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing and Maktaba, the first bilingual children’s library in the Arabian Gulf. The schedule will be as follows:
    • Stories for toddlers from 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM
    • Stories for pre-school children from 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM
    • Bedtime stories from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
  • Create your own Modern Art with Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art. Stop by their station to create a personalized postcard to share your favorite sites and memories of Qatar with your friends.

  • Play a game of Life Size Foosball with Qatar Stars League! Stop by to meet some of your favorite Football players and challenge them to a soccer shoot out.
  • See beautiful kites soar along the water at Katara beach. Join Kiteman Productions and learn how to fly and build your own kite, and launch a wish lantern.
  • Come see the amazing sand sculpture created by Jenny, The Sand Castle Girl on the beach of Katara. Join her on Wednesday and Thursday for sandcastle workshops and view the sculpture on Friday at Family Day.
  • Play with the latest in gaming technology! Visit the SONY Experience sponsored by Fifty One East. Enter the gaming pod to test your racecar driving skills on the Gran Turismo speed way or sing like a superstar with the Sing-Star Dance game.
  • Ever wonder how they create amazing action scenes in movies or create 3D effects? Visit the DFI Filmmaking area to learn and play with Green Screen technology and participate in animation workshops.
  • Enjoy traditional Qatari culture, hospitality and atmosphere with Al Badya Heritage Club.

  • The Childhood Cultural Center will be hosting a number of activities in the village including a Big Talent open mic show, and arts and crafts.
  • The Katara Art Center will be hosting family events and activities25 October – 30 October from 10 AM – 11 PM each day. Stop by the Hara Hara Exhibit, hear a great story in the Storytelling / Reading room, or participate in arts and crafts.
  • Qatar Music Academy:
    Friday October 28that 6:00PM
    Join the Takht- Ziriab Ensemble as they give a performance of Maqam (traditional music)
    Before the show, families can participate in a wide range of music workshops presented by QMA including:
    • Drumming Ensemble A brief introduction to how to play a hand drumming percussion instrument
      • Workshops at 4:00PM, 4:30PM, and 5:00PM
    • Making Music Using Percussion Children will have the opportunity to play tuned and non-tuned percussion instruments in a group environment.
      • Workshops for ages 5-7 at 4:00PM and 4:30PM
      • Workshops for ages 8-10 at 5:00PM and 5:30PM
    • Toddlers’ Music Children sing musical games from around the world with their parents, which incorporate percussion instruments, actions to mark the pulse, changes in tempo and dynamics, and also encourage the children to use their imagination.

    • Arab Music A brief introduction to Arab musical instruments and vocal repertoire

    • Little People’s Music Children aged 4-5 years and their parents sing musical games from around the world, listen to live music and play rhythmic patterns on percussion instruments.
      • Workshops for ages 4-5 at 5:00PM and 5:30PM
  • Stamps are beautiful and unique, stop by the Al-Ajial Courtyard October 26- October 28th to create your own stamp with the Arab Postal Stamp Museum!
  • Watch DFI student shorts at the Qatar Photographic Society throughout the day!
  • What do you want to be when you grow up? Teens and younger children can come to the Bedaya Center for a career assessment or fun coloring craft.

DFI Kids Access Program

The DFI Kids Access Program will feature a diverse group of well-rounded, enthusiastic and articulate student reporters (ages 9-13) from Doha who will cover all of the age-appropriate events and happenings at the 2011 Doha Tribeca Film Festival. This “kid on the street” reporting team would include balanced representation of bi-lingual Arabic and English-speaking students as well as natives of Qatar.

From Red Carpet premieres and panel discussions to all of the action at Family Day, the content generated by this passionate and enthusiastic team (blogs and reviews, along with exclusive pictures and video footage) will appear in the Family Programs section on the DFI website and in all appropriate news outlets for the Festival. The reporters will be supported by camera crews from the DFI Content team, Qatar University and Doha College.
