Doha Tribeca Film Festival Announces Programming For Family Day

Doha, Qatar [20 October 2010] – The Doha Tribeca Film Festival Family Day on Friday, October 29, 2010 will offer wonderful opportunities for children and families to play, experience, and learn as they engage in the adventure of discovering the wonders of Katara, the new cultural village of Doha.

A “Passport to Fun” will guide everyone through the varied and delightful experiences of the day. From arts & crafts, performances, workshops, games, screenings, stage performances, a Zoetrope Village and more, each and every experience will be an opportunity for local families and children to celebrate Qatari culture and community.
There will be entertainment and special performances throughout the day on the streets of Katara and on multiple Festival Stages, along with crafts, games, storytelling, art shows, and character appearances. The Doha Tribeca Film Festival Family Day will run from Noon to 10:30PM, and the day will end with special family film screenings in the Katara Open Air Theatre and evening performances along Katara’s Esplanade.
The Katara Open Air Theater will showcase some of the best films DTFF has to offer, for free! On Family Day at 7:00 PM., take a ride with the film, Secretariat, a story about the thrilling, pulse-quickening world of thoroughbred horse racing. Secretariat is an inspirational story for the whole family.

The second Family Day feature is Boy, the New Zealand coming-of-age story about a supremely likeable kid who reunites with his long-lost dad. Activities begin at 10:00PM and Boy screens at 10:30 PM.

TALENT /PERFORMANCE GROUPS
Professional Talent, along with Local School and Community Acts, will be scheduled to perform throughout the day on our multiple Esplanade Stages. Some of the planned talent includes Manaia (Maori Performing Arts Company), The B-Boys (Break-Dance Team), Al Jazeera Children’s Channel, Gympanzee Puppet Show, Martial Arts Demonstrations, the International Academy of Intercultural Development and the Cirque Katara Troupe.

WORKSHOPS
“Bring The Funny” Comedy Workshop (Hosted by Ahmed Ahmed, international actor and comic, and director of JUST LIKE US)
• Stand-Up Comedy Workshop led by Ahmed Ahmed, the Egyptian-American comedian who makes his directorial debut with the documentary JUST LIKE US. The workshop will culminate in an on-stage presentation and “Open Mic” Showcase featuring the funniest of the funny of workshop participants.

“Clowning Around” Acting Workshop (Hosted by actress and director Lee Delong)
• Acting workshop led by celebrated film acting coach and teacher Lee Delong. The workshop will lead to a live musical performance on one of our Festival Stages.

“Lights! Camera! Action!” Casting Call
• Kids and families will be able to make their film acting debuts in several “hot set” scenes complete with cue cards, costumes and props. Scenes will be videotaped and then given to participants after a quick post-production edit.

“Making Movie Magic” with Matt Aitken
• The creator of special effects for such blockbuster films as LORD OF THE RINGS, KING KONG, AVATAR and the future release TIN TIN shares his secrets of making movie magic in a special presentation and talk-back session.

DOHARD Action Filmmaking
• A special stunt-action presentation hosted by Manu Laude, producer of the action short film DOHARD and featuring the cast of the film.

FEATURED TENTS ON THE KATARA ESPLANADE
There will be a number of featured tents and stages along the Katara Esplanade hosting a variety of activities and events, including the Zoetrope Village, Kids Art Pavilion, Qatari Crafts (hosted by Ministry of Social Affairs) and a DFI Filmmaking Center.

OTHER FAMILY FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES DURING DTFF
The Family Corner
On select afternoons throughout DTFF, there will be a special place for children and families to gather and enjoy some fun activities and refreshments. The Family Corner (located outside of Building 4) will offer a warm and welcoming place for children and families throughout the week as they visit the Cultural Village of Katara.
The Family Corner will be open from 3 – 6 PM and run from Wednesday October 27th to Saturday October 30th.

DTFF Hosts The Giffoni Experience
DTFF will host the Giffoni Experience in Doha this year for an international exchange of kid’s ideas and film experiences. Local children from Doha will join with international guests to become “jurors” of a carefully curated selection of short films. Throughout the week, the Giffoni student jurors will watch films, learn about filmmaking, and have the opportunity for engaging exchanges of opinions and ideas following the film sessions with special guest panelists and presenters.

DTFF’s Giffoni Experience will take place at City Center on Thursday 28th and will feature two short film programs. The jurors will be made up of 8 to12 year-olds for the first screening, and 13 year-olds and up for the second.

Master Kishan, Guinness Book of World Records’ Youngest Director will be hosting the two screenings, and will be joined by a panel of other industry professionals. The Students will vote and the winner will be announced on Saturday evening during the Doha Tribeca Film Festival Awards Show at the Opera House in Katara, the Cultural Village of Doha.

PARKING
Venue Information:
Katara
Free public parking will NOT be available inside of Katara during the festival. Katara will operate under a Park & Ride system from two different locations in close proximity to Katara: Parking is available in either the backside of the Doha Exhibition Center or the Katara Public Parking (for access to both follow DTFF signs via route to the Intercontinental Hotel). Frequent shuttle service will be provided from both locations to Katara Centre.

Limited paid public parking spaces are available at the Katara Underground Garage. You can purchase a Vehicle Permit for 50 QR to park in the Katara Underground Garage during all festival dates (Oct 26th- Oct 30th). Please contact the DTFF Box Office for more information.

City Center and Villaggio
Parking is limited and not guaranteed at these locations, please plan accordingly, especially during peak hours.
