Synopsis
‘Journey to Mecca’ (2009) tells the story of Ibn Battuta (Chems Eddine Zinoun), a young scholar who leaves Tangier in 1325 on an epic and perilous journey, travelling alone from his home in Morocco to reach Mecca, some 4,800 kilometres to the East. Along the route he meets an unlikely stranger, the Highwayman (Hassam Ghancy), who becomes his paid protector and eventually his friend. During his travels he is attacked by bandits, dehydrated by thirst, rescued by Bedouins, and forced to retrace his route by a war-locked Red Sea. Upon his arrival in Mecca, he is a man transformed. Presented by Doha Film Institute as part of ‘Hajj – The Journey Through Art’, an exhibition curated by the Museum of Islamic Art in collaboration with the British Museum.
