Garangao competition winners score festival passes
Aug 15, 2012
Three of Doha’s budding photographers have won our Garangao photo competition.
On the 14th night of Ramadan, children from across Qatar came to Katara to celebrate the annual tradition. We asked you to submit your photographs and a panel of jurors from Doha Film Institute selected the best three.
They’ve each won festival passes and their photographs are now featured on our site.
Here we meet the winners:
First Place: Umer Shabib, 26. Prize: A festival pass and two exclusive Red Carpet tickets for Opening Night.
I was born and raised in Doha and have seen many Garangao celebrations.
I didn’t know how my picture would turn out but I wanted to give it a try. It was a surprise for me to win. I’m looking forward to meeting new people from the film industry at DTFF 2012. I’d like to work in it myself one day. I plan to make my own film next year. |
Second Place Winner: Gazanfarulla Khan, 25 Prize: Prize pack for festival including access to five screenings an exclusive Red Carpet ticket for Opening Night.
The best thing was watching the children collecting their sweets. They wait a year for this, and the happiness is visible from their faces. . The girl in the photo was all dressed up getting her sweets. I asked her if I could photograph her. She said “sure”, covered her hair and started posing. . At DTFF 2012, I’m looking forward to seeing films by newcomers who have produced short films in Qatar. |
Third Place: Haider Chughtai, 18. Prize: Ticket pack to the festival including access to three screenings.
A friend told me about Garangao at Katara this year, and we decided to go along. . I was using a Canon EOS 1000D and tried to get the best picture possible. Garangao is an annual Arabic festival to celebrate, give children sweets and bring happiness. . I’m excited to win tickets; I mostly enjoy romantic films, and sometimes action movies. |
