• Screening complements Museum of Islamic Art’s ongoing exhibition ‘Imperial Threads: Motifs and Artisans from Turkey, Iran and India’

Doha, Qatar; April 26, 2017: The Doha Film Institute Cinema (DFI Cinema) celebrates the ongoing Imperial Threads exhibition by the Museum of Islamic Arts (MIA) with the screening of Gabbeh (France, Iran/1996), by Mohsen Makhmalbaf.

The screenings open free for the public, will be held on April 27 and 28, 2017 at the Museum of Islamic Art Auditorium at 7:30PM. Tickets for the screening can be reserved by logging on to www.dohafilminstitute.com, or requested at the Museum of Islamic Art DFI Ticket Outlet.

With a runtime of 75 minutes, Gabbeh is about a nomadic tribe in Southeast Iran, whose specialty is weaving ‘gabbeh’ (Iranian carpets) which is dying out. On the banks of a river, an old woman who is washing one of these carpets seems to be conversing with it. The motifs of this ‘gabbeh’ relate the love story of a young girl whose parents refuse to let her marry the man she loves. As the tribe starts a long journey across the steppe, the man follows on horseback far behind.

Written and directed by Mohsen Makhmalbaf, the film’s cast includes: Shaghayeh Djodat, Hossein Moharami and Rogheih Moharami.

Mohsen Makhmalbaf is regarded as one of the most influential filmmakers and founder of the new wave of Iranian cinema in the world today. His films including Salam Cinema, A Moment of Innocence, Gabbeh, Kandahar and The President have been well received across the globe and have won him over 50 international awards from leading film festivals of Cannes, Venice and Locarno among others. Kandahar was chosen as one of the top 100 best films in the history of cinema by ‘Time’ magazine.
